Nobody Walks In LA

Not true. I do and did yesterday. 9 miles. I can barely move this morning but that's besides the point. To really see and experience anything, anywhere, it's best to walk. Here in the Land of La, where the automobile rules, people walk out their front doors, get into their cars, drive to work, get out of their cars, walk from their parking spot to their jobs, walk around the office, and at the end of the day, walk back to their cars and go home. That's it really. 2 people I've told about my walk didn't compliment me for enjoying the good weather or promoting heart health. Simply wanted to know, "are you insane?" Maybe I am but how else would I see such idiosyncratic charm displayed in this window on Sunset Boulevard?

or watch this child help her mother at work

or wonder aloud, "Aren't they one in the same?"

Flag On The Play

No launch. Hydrogen gas leak. Drat.

Endeavor Launch

I'm hearing Carly Simon's "Anticipation" in my head. As I do for EVERY launch, eagerly awaiting this morning's liftoff. Love this stuff. Always have. This picture IS the Endeavor but from a previous mission. Took the photograph on a private tour. I'd worked on a TV pilot called "Astronauts" and NASA invited any of the crew back to witness a launch. As one who can remember the excitement of the night of July 20, 1969, all things about space exploration are of importance to me. Argue all you want about it's a waste of money. Don't agree one iota. The world isn't flat is it and how was that proven? I rest my case.

Some Thoughts

Screw detente. High heels are a Communist plot.

Why don't more people whistle?

Bill Maher isn't funny.

I'm certain garlic fries ARE one of the five major food groups.

Mt. Hollywood

Oddly enough NOT where the Hollywood sign is located.

The goal and the trail to the top.

The view on they way up with smiles.

Crowded on top and more coming.

Stretch it out as the sunshine finally arrives

Maybe you're asking where's the pic of the view from the top of Mt. Hollywood? Truth? I was so exhausted from the climb I couldn't press the button on the camera. Sad. Anyway, not stellar view this morning. Too overcast. Maybe next trek. Maybe. Where's my Motrin?

Post Cards

Like handwritten letters these communiques are disappearing. The original "tweet," Post Cards provide snippets of information, which capture experiences and memories of time. Their format reflects historical pictorials and enables arm chair tours of the world. Ages ago they were also used as holiday greeting cards.

Each time I visit a flea market I seek them out. Yesterday this one caught my eye. Sent from Fawnskin which is near Big Bear Lake in Southern California. Mailed August 19, 1974.

" Dear Debbie,
I am having alot of fun at Big Bear. The first night I got sick & threw up all over, but I fill fine now. Hope you fill fine. I will see you when I get back."
Luv Darha

Succinct.

Such a unique way to capture people, places and things. One that I have is a black and white photograph depicting an elderly Native American Indian woman bent over by the weight of the basket of wood she is carrying. The inscription reads, "Indian Life near Crescent City, Calif." Her forlorn look conveys her hardship. Penciled on the back is the name Polly Tootooney.

Some I've found from the Western Publishing and Novelty Company of Los Angeles depict California's nature icons; Death Valley and Yosemite National Park. I also have images of LA's City Hall, The Hollywood Bowl and Santa Anita Race Track from the 60's. I want to locate post cards of LA that no longer exists. The Brown Derby, Nickodels, Ambassador Hotel, Chasens.

I've kept numerous ones sent to me from friends during their travels. Those with exotic white sand beaches, castles, mummies, royalty, etc. One year a friend and I engaged in a Post Card "war." We each sought out the most unique we could find and mailed them to one another. Maybe I should restart that "war."

Finding old time Post Cards is akin to a treasure hunt. Doesn't mean I don't buy present day cards. I do. Have one bought on my last trip North to see Dad. The picture shows the Little Shasta Church (built in 1878) sitting beneath the majesty of Mt. Shasta. On the back of the card there is a map of Jefferson Territory. "A Place That Never Was Yet Will Always Be."

Another historical POV.

Rose Bowl Flea Market

It's huge! It's fun. 2nd Sunday of every month. Hadn't been in ages so headed East to Pasadena. Always an enjoyable sojourn. Did I take my camera? Moi?!?

Loads of "stuff."

Interesting people.

Men in Drag Saturday

Just caught the end of "The Birdcage" where Gene Hackman appears as the ugliest drag queen on earth. Makes me laugh each time! Now, "Some Like it Hot" is starting on TCM. Coincidence? I think not. Dame Edna IS behind the magic curtain. I know it!

Do Boas Shrink In The Rain?

Hope not. I'm wearing one to see Dame Enda tonight.
Cannot afford a fashion faux pas!
